PPS (Personal Property Securities) reform impacting on Australian Hire and Rental Businesses

Hire and Rental businesses, particular those businesses who hire/rent their goods in some cases for a period of over 90 days to over one year may be in a position where they will have to review their current hire terms on agreements and other documents to ensure that they take into account the application of the PPS Act.

From 30 January 2012, the Personal Properties Securities Act 2009 established a new system for the creation, priority and enforcement of security interests in personal property, which is generally all property other than land, fixtures and certain statutory interests. The Act generally applies to security interests in goods provided that the goods are located in Australia, or the grantor of the security interest is an Australian entity.

The main consideration for hire/rental businesses is the impact of the newly established Personal Properties Security Register, on which security interests in personal property may be registered. If you haven’t yet registered your interest in your hire goods on the PPS Register you may find that the goods you have rented are now the property of someone else! The reason for this is that the PPS Act does not generally consider the identity of the owner of the property subject to a security interest when determining priority between two or more security interests in the same property. For example – the lessor’s ownership of the property will not determine who may have priority; it will be the priority rules in the PPS Act.

American Event and Event Rental Industry Fights Back!

In a recent post , we discussed how the downturn in the American economy was leading to a substantive downturn in the $175 Billion corporate meetings market.

Driven by companies slashing their conference, event and major meetings budget.  Such budgets incur not only event equipment rental and event hire costs, but also travel, accommodation/venue costs.

Surveys indicate that over 60% of all companies intend to reduce their spending on meetings next year.   See earlier  post in this blog – titled Why tough times should benefit the hire and rental industry

One factor that is concerning is why!  Many companies recognize the importance of holding client and staff events and meetings.  However in the current climate, many shareholders and Government Agencies providing stimulus funds perceive such events and meetings as lavish junkets.  Companies and Corporations are “sheepish” about defending the business value, hence opt to cancel them.

Now a coalition of event and meet industry- including event rental and event hire companies, as well as planners and organizers are fighting back.  They have formed a coalition to lobby the USA Government about the benefits of events and meetings to the USA economy and USA Corporate Health.

The Keep America Meeting campaign provides on line information about the business value of the industry.  Furthermore it includes an online petition to be presented to politicians.

This initiative of the event industry is welcomed, and should be seen as a role model for other event and meeting industries is similarly effected countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

Making Life Ezy suppliers of the most innovative event and party rental software welcome the coalitions initiative.

How to Use Alexa to Improve Your Search Rankings

1

Alexa provides the generally accepted global rankings for websites.

Whether it is accurate or not, the point is mute, the fact is that it is the generally accepted web site ranking.

Did You Know

That in July 2008, Google announced that it had just indexed over 1,000,000,000,000 (USA one trillion) unique web pages (url’s). Impressed well you should be because ten years earlier it was only 26 million (which is only 0.0026% of one trillion).

What are Alexa Rankings?

Alexa ranks sites based on the information gathered from Internet users who use the Alexa tool bar on their browser.

OK, yes not every one has Alexa tool bar so the traffic rankings are estimates only.  Hence the criticism levelled at Alexa from some quarters.

But then again what’s the difference between these estimates and television ratings, they are only estimates as well
The primary users of the data are advertisers.  Trying to determine which show (web site) to advertise on to reach their target market.

But Alexa actually offers more than that!

The Only Advertising on Our Site is Our Own – So Why Bother About Rankings?

Great question!

Yes, you can actually have a very low ranked site, yet be effective in generating traffic your website from good keyword usage.  Evidence that you have a good SEO practise in place.

Under Rated Benefits of Alexa

Alexa is a under rated marketing tool:

  1. Enhance Your Credibility. One aspect of the sales process, particularly on-line marketing and sales is proving that you are credible.  Basically you can deliver what you say.  Customer testimonials on your site as well as other proofs.  Having a good Alexa traffic ranking can form part of the credibility proof set.  Why because it implies to on-line customers that other people value your site.
  2. Market Research. Alexa is an excellent market research tool to support your competitor and market analysis.  In areas like your performance relative to them, keywords, reach etc.
  3. Guide to Social Media Marketing Performance. Ok out on a limb here, but we found that when we were really active on social media marketing our Alexa ranking went North with a bullet!!!  So arguments about methodology etc of Alexa aside it was a useful tool we think in measuring our performance.

Social media isn’t the problem- its the current crop of managers

The current generation of managers (C Levels) are the barrier to Social Media.

And the problem is not social media that has just brought it to a head

There has been lots of traffic over recent months how junior staff are struggling to convince older managers of the benefits of Social Media.

The are stuggle has to come to a head because of Social Media

The C Level Managers today were junior staff in the 1980′s.  A time when the whole western world got so wrapped up in down-sizing, right sizing – productivity improvements.

They think, and I should know I went through it too, all about lean and mean – minimum staff to do a job – its all about the productivity per person.  To most of them Social Media is idle chatter in fact all chatter is idle.

All Customer Conversations are Idle Chatter

To the C Level Managers today whose careers started in the late 1970′s and 1980′s – any customer conversation is idle chatter.  Think about it, have you heard things like this.

Telephone Calls:  You spent too long on the customer account call! And by the way what were you talking to them about their kids playing basketball for?

Counter Service:  Stop talking to the customers just serve them and move on, time is money.

Now Bring on Social Media

Social media is about engaging with people, actually chatting to them.  That is most definitely not going to fly with a productivity mindset manager, especially when the results are hard to prove.

So as BenYoskovitz puts it

Unfortunately, too many mid-level and junior-level employees are forced to spend a disproportionate amount of their time figuring out how to justify things to their bosses ….

Marketing Will Tell Customers

Its not up to YOU  to create a relationship with customers – marketing will TELL our customers we want a relationship with them.

Probably a bit harsh that line, but I spent twenty years in Corporate life before joining the excellent world of a Small to Medium business.

But there is an element of truth to it.  Corporate marketing departments “control” the public message, including defining the companies relationship with clients.  Depending on the value of the client that is.

Measurement is the Key

The 1980′s crop of managers are not dumb, ( well I hope I am not) our careers have been built around measurement.  Measuring results is needed to justify decisions. That is just the way we were taught to think.   However we all struggle to measure the intangible value of customer conversations (relationship building conversations).

Social media will in time develop the metrics to prove it works.  Once it proves it and allowing for some time to change mindsets it will be adopted.  And it does work, for example

We dumped google adwords and just use Social Media and our leads went up 83%.

True Customer Relation Building May Become in Vogue

And this may even flow on to the broader area of customer conversations.  May be Dale Carnegie‘s principals for enhancing relationships may become in vogue again.

  • Become Genuinely Interested In Other People.
  • Be A Good Listener. Encourage Others To Talk About Themselves.
  • Talk In Terms Of The Other Person’s Interests.
  • Make The Other Person Feel Important — And Do It Sincerely.

Ultimately we will get back to talking to customers either on the phone, in the aisle, at the counter or on facebook etc.  Because the proof will emerge that it pays to do so.

For example more companies like us will be able to show themselves and others that Social Media infact time anytime spent on customer conversations works.

Small Businesses Doubles its Use of Social Media

In a recent post we looked at the surprisingly slow adoption of social media marketing  by Hire and Rental companies.

This was a surprising finding given that it is an natural marketing channel, in particular for party rental and event hire companies.

In a recent report by Small Business Success Index,

small businesses are steadily increasing their adoption of social media to attract and retain customers at a relatively low cost.

Despite this slow start- Growth Has Doubled

Nearly One in 4 small businesses now use social media.

The main reason cited is that they believe it will help attract and retain customers.

The full article with detailed discussions can be found by clicking the link below.

Social Media Addicts Guide to Surviving Xmas/ New Year

1

Christmas can be a particularly hard time – especially for those of us addicted to Social Media!

So here is a simple guide to how to relate to Christmas interpretations of common jargon we use.

- Firstly  – We dont re-tweet presents we open them

- We dont make blog posts we open letter posts

- Christmas is about Face to Face not Facebook

 - The only Digg we do is in to the bottom of the Esky (cooler) for another beer

- The only buzz should come from general family table chatter,  (hmm unless novetly presents are involved)

- MySpace is a reference to the spot you sit down at, or in the Southern Hemisphere where your going to have a Nanna nap after lunch in the heat

- Delicious is a reference to the quality of the meal, bookmarking it later does not qualify as a taking home a doggie bag

-

- Finally Stumble upon refers to not to a social bookmarking site rather the finding of another beer in the Esky when your thought you had run out.

Finally if you want to do something useful on the Computer.

For those of you with Children, Grand Children or even younger siblings here is the tool of the day- NORAD’s santa tracking web site.

I hope you enjoy and on behalf of all the staff here all the best to you and your family for Christmas and The New Year!!!

Increasing Average Age of Equipment Rental or Hire – Impact

Following the global financial turmoil and subsequent recession there has been evidence of an understandable increase in the average age of equipment on rent or hire.

The reasons why are:

Vendor Financing

Vendor financing has been significantly curtailed.

The Car rental industry is one obvious case in point, where the average age of even the major rental fleets is increasing.

The key reason is the lack of capital.  Previously the major Car Rental companies relied on financing from the major automotive manufacturers.  Such financing had been cutback substantially, for all the reasons discussed in the News and in Congress.

Bank Financing

The other form of new equipment financing has been by bank loans in various forms.  The general tightening of credit from the Banks and other major institutions has meant that it has been harder to finance the acquisition of new stock.  Despite being bailed out by the tax-payers around the world, the banks were reluctant to continue providing credit to Small business to fund new equipment purchases.  The reason cited by some banks was that Small Business was  a credit risk(Side note:  Interesting assessment by the Banks, from what I remember they were the one’s that created the GFC, they were the one’s tax-payers had to bail out – so who is the risk? )

With lines of credit curtailed many small businesses were unable to fund new rental and hire equipment purchases.  Instead electing to extend the life of the equipment.

Funding From Asset Disposal

During the harshest periods of the downturn, older stock items attracted lower sales attention and hence realized sales value.  Such lower values on sale for older items, meant less cash to purchase to acquire new equipment.

Furthermore, these lower sales value a further flow on effect.  When the actual value received at sale is lower than the book value then the difference has to be written off.  When large volumes of items or a major capital equipment are disposed of through sale the impact on the rental or hire companies balance sheet can be significant.  This balance sheet impact further reduces the companies ability to borrow capital or maintain a certain line of credit from the banks.

Cash Flow

The other major financing option was through cash flow.  That is cash flow used to fund (pay) for new equipment when it was on a payment plan of some description.

Secondly, the loss of the first two meant that hire and rental businesses became and still remain primarily focused on cash flow management.

Even with the Green Shoots of recovery around the World, including an Indian summer for the hire industry in the UK at present, many hire and rental companies continue to manage cash flow, primarily through cost containment.

Impacts

Therefore with an aging rental or hire equipment pool must creates a higher demand for repair, servicing and inspection.  The frequency rate or intensity of inspection/ servicing invariably increases with age.  But here are some tools that may help:

YoutubeYou Tube: That may surprise you, but You Tube can be an extremely effective in reducing equipment damage by providing a visual of how to assemble, dis-assemble or maintain an equipment.  To read more on this read the article on How Rental and Hire Companies can use You Tube You Tube management is fully integrated in to HireEzy, making this an extremely simple process.

HireEzyBoxHireEzy 2.1: Includes product management functions such as equipment service scheduling, maintenance and history.

Rental and Hire’s Business Future

The one for certain is that this situation wont last forever.  The hire and rental industry is dynamic and progressive.  It will no doubt commence updating equipment as soon as practical.

More importantly the Hire and Rental industry is fundamental the recovery, as explained in the article Global Innovation Depends on

Political Cartoonists and Advertising – what is the link?

1
The question is what have Political Cartoonists got to do with the Business Advertising, specifically advertising?

On face value the question would seem quite silly, but it is not.

Print Media advertising has a been a key part of the hire industry and rental industry advertising mix for decades!

But is print media advertising it still effective?

Traditional newspapers and serious print media are under serious threat. Not convinced, then consider this – In 2009 alone nearly 90 USA newspapers or magazines have closed or migrated to just web delivery.  Taking nearly 9000  jobs with them!   Erica Smith a journalist herself has been mapping the decline of the traditional media for years, her blog is universally regarded.

Update an article just published today, 1 Sep 09 on social mashable that Newspaper revenues have declined by 29% compared to the same quarter last year.  This is a dramatic drop.  To read the full article click here

Why the decline?

The traditional business model of Newspapers is advertising revenues fund quality journalism which attracts a readership demographic. The attracted readership demographic appeals to particular advertisers who in turn then pay for the newspaper advertising. However things are changing:

  1. Increasingly people would rather go on line and read what they want from where they want when they want.
  2. Secondly, user generated news content is replacing serious journalistic analysis and commentary.
  3. Finally, as readership has declined companies etc have moved their advertising from print to digital.

So back to the Political Cartoonists

Political Cartoonists have become a barometer of the health and relevance of the Traditional Media.  As one USA political cartoonist during a NPR radio interview stated, a decade ago their were over 300 print media employed political cartoonists in the USA now their are less than 50. The reason is that the advertising revenues of newspapers has declined, forcing newspapers to cut back on staff, including the visual editorial staff such as cartoonists.

Cartoonists like journalists are critical in attracting or maintaining a readership. Each incremental loss of such staff, eg cartoonists, reduces the newspapers readership appeal or reach into a market demographic. It is this market demographic reach that appeals to the advertisers.

So if newspapers are cutting back on quality journalism, including political cartoonists then the effect could be a reduction in their readership. Therefore if readership declines (market demographic reach), then the effectiveness of advertising through such newspapers begins to become a consideration.

Print Advertising

The question then arising for all businesses (or our focus specifically Hire and Rental companies) becomes is newspaper advertising still an effective marketing channel?

Judging from anecdotal evidence many businesses,  hire and rental companies included,  have voted with their keyboards and have begun to spread their marketing budgets into on-line marketing and even social media. Evidence also exists in other industry sectors, eg in a recent article in Tire Business one owner cited that in 5 years his print advertising budget had been reduced from over 50% to 11%, (click on quote to access the full article – well worth reading)

..., who operates 15 stores across Michigan, said half his ad budget goes to direct mail and TV, but only 11 percent goes to newspaper advertising. Five years ago, more than half of Northwest Tire’s ad budget went towards newspaper ads.

The Answer

So the question was what have political cartoonists got to do with advertising trends? Well the answer is – as the number of employed political cartoonists in the traditional print media declines so does the business spend on traditional print media advertising.

SMS can reduce booking cancellations

Research in the USA has shown that SMS reminders can reduce booking no shows by as much as 25%.

Reminding clients the day before the booking is due for collection can reduce your no show cancellations.

If a client does not appear for an appointment, that costs a business money. It’s a missed opportunity for the organization unless a punitive “no-show” policy is put into place. An SMS is a polite, unobtrusive way of delivering this reminder.

For Companies that hire services or even equipment a no show is simply lost revenue.

Most hire and rental companies even if the hire or rent equipment are effectively selling time.  If that time is lost, it can be regained.  For example, if a client hires or rents a service from 10am to 12 pm and doesn’t show, then revenue for that time slot is lost.  Unless a walk in customer appears there and then or another customer can be brought forward.

Even rental of equipment is impacted.  If a client confirms a booking of a equipment for the day and then doesn’t show the sale for that day is arguably lost.

Therefore taking simple cost effective measures to reduce booking cancellations is worthwhile.

People Quicker to Respond to Text’s

It is not just the cost saving that drives SMS effectiveness it is people’s attitudes to text.  Research by USA Telecommunications Company Sprint has shown that people respond quicker to text’s than voice mails.

all age groups are more likely to respond to a text message more quickly than a voice message. Predictably, among adults under 30 years of age, 78 percent say they respond immediately or within minutes to a text message. Even 54 percent of 55- to 64-year-olds said they respond to a text

Integrate SMS in WorkFlow

For hire and rental companies, SMS is integrated into HireEzy. Simply opne the client booking, click SMS, icon, type in the text you want to send and transmit.  The SMS message is then automatically recorded against your customer record.

SMS is an effective tool in that  for a few cents, can reduce lost booking revenue of multiple dollars.

Using SMS with HireEzy is easy.

SMS credits are available from us, at discount rates.

Why Communicating With Customers Is Now Harder Yet Easier

1
Communicating with customers/ prospects is now both easier and yet more difficult!

Easier because there are more channels available to communicate with customers / prospects such as Social Media.

Yet more difficult because customers or prospects have more choices from which to receive communications and more selective in who they invite to send information.

Note: In this article the term customer is used to cover both existing customers and prospects.

Why Is It More Difficult!

Communicating with customers even five years ago was fairly straight forward.   You could communicate directly through email, mail or even the telephone.  Or you could advertise in the newspaper, yellow pages or if you could afford it Television or Radio.

But all of these are now less effective than five years ago

You may well have your customers address, email or phone number

but are you actually reaching them?

Traditional Mail

This is not new we have all known this for years. Companies are increasingly using electronic means to communicate and invoice and pay bills.  For example according to the Washington Post, the US Postal Service has ..

That downward trend is only accelerating. The Postal Service projects a decline of about 10 billion pieces of mail in each of the next two years, going from a high of 213 billion pieces of mail in 2006 to 170 billion projected for 2010.

And nearly half of this is junk mail!

the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) delivered 153.8 billion pieces of mail, of which 43 percent, or 66.4 billion pieces, were junk mail.

Decline of Email

Email is beginning to decline in popularity, as more communication options become available.

In 2003, people spent 46% of their time online using sites which fall into the “communications” category – that is, sites whose core capabilities are email and instant messaging. By 2009, that usage dropped to 27% or a 41% decline in overall use.

May be spam has contributed to the decline in people’s focus on email as a primary source of communication.

In Microsoft’s latest biannual report on the state of computer security, the company says that in the second half of 2008, a full 97.3 percent of email traffic was unwanted spam (or malicious email like phishing attacks and outright viruses).

Tele-Sales Now Seen As Least Effective

Business to Business tele-marketing or sales is also in decline for a number of reasons, not the least of which are changes in the legislation’s around the world governing tele-marketing practises.  Many now view out bound tele-marketing as the least effective option.

90% view Telemarketing as at least as effective as their other marketing mediums.

Decline of Yellow Pages/ NewsPapers/ Television

Even these – the stalwarts of advertising for decades are in decline, see previous post Advertising media types

So Where Are Customers Going

Well it appears they are becoming more interested in Social Media.  However social media whilst opening up new channels also poses some interesting problems.

It is Discretionary

Yes you can communicate with customers now by using Twitter or Facebook etc.  However it is at the customers discretion as to whether they allow you to communicate with them.  Either by adding as a Friend on Facebook or Following You on Twitter.

Facebook and Twitter are arguably direct communication social media type but there are more indirect channels.

Common Interest

Many years ago I read the Dale Carnegie Classic – “How to Win Friends and Influence People” .  In that book, I remember reading the story of how he (or someone) had tried to make an appointment with a prospect for years – but failed.  He then found that they both had a common interest in something.  From this he was able to develop a friendship which led to sales.

This can be the same with Social Media!

For example through say Social Book marking sites (eg Digg, Stumble on) you may find that you have common interests in similar articles.  Developing relationships this way can lead to either direct sales or them even referring you on to their community or contacts.    It also provides a means to commence a discussion leading potentially to being invited to join their discretionary social media sites.

Social Media provides opportunities to engage prospects and customers indirectly, by finding things of common interest.

It Works!

For example, our software is developed for hire and rental companies.  One of our major points of difference is integration with the Web and Social Media.  We therefore are genuinely interested in both subjects.  We write about it (blog posts), we read about it  and we comment about it.  Through this process we have found similar like minded companies and individuals and built really good communities on Facebook (>350 friends), Twitter (>3000 followers) and also on Digg and Stumble On.  It does deliver results for us:

We trailed just using Social Media Marketing for three months.  We dropped Adwords all together and found that our sales leads increased by over 80% and our Alex Web Site ranking went up 1000% in the same period.  See full post – “Is Social Media Marketing Worth The Effort”

Summary

So yes on one hand their are more ways to communicate with your customers yet at the same time it is more difficult.  We are entering a period where increasingly customers are gaining control over who, what, when and how they are communicated with.  This will pose a both challenges and opportunities to marketing people for in the future.

Event Hire and Rental statistics and opportunities

(Source Reuters) News reports in the USA have pointed to a savage downturn in the $175 billion corporate meetings market.

Driven by companies slashing their conference, event and major meetings budget. Such budgets incur not only event equipment rental and event hire costs, but also travel, accommodation/venue costs.

Surveys indicate that over 60% of all companies intend to reduce their spending on meetings next year. Industry professionals such as Kevin Maguire, President of National Business Travel says ” I have been in this business for over 40 years and I have neer seen anything like this before”
The issue at hand is not that there is a downturn, that just has to be accepted, but rather what to do about it.

The hire and rental sectors most impacted would be event hire, event rental, av hire and av rental, with some flow over in to the party hire or party rental markets. There are some potential solutions.

Event Solution versus Event Product provider.

If you are a provider of products to the events, ie you react to orders from marketing departments or venue organisers, you may be in a difficult position. Because you are effectively removed from the Corporate decision makers who make decisions on whether to hold events or not. Often the first thing you know about it is in your sales figures as the orders dont come in.

However if you offer event planning as a service to support the hire or rental of your products then you will be better placed. The reason why you will be better placed, is that your engagement with the Corporate decision makers will enable you to understand what their company is doing and more importantly why.

Why is important to know? Whilst some companies will be adamant that the cuts will be made, others will be less rigid. The corporate person you normally deal with will generally be keen to see events re-instated, as often it is an important part of their role. If you can help them by assisting them to sell the business value of holding events then not only will it aid you in potential sales it will most definitely aid you in gaining a long term relationship.

Selling the Business Value of Events

So if one of your market segments is the corporate event marketing then ask yourself the question can you sell the business value to them of maintaining or even increasing their event budgets?

If you can not, then do you know management consultants, meeting facilitators etc who also target the same market. Remember many of these consultants are also impacted by the downturn. They are often key participants, organisers etc of such corporate events. Such consultants are specialised in selling business value.

Meeting with them can assist you in understanding the key issues and focus. Consider the information you gain from the meeting, is there an opportunity for you to partner with them. Ie is there a mutual value for both of you to be gained from such a relationship?

Finally a downturn is an opportunity for some a threat to others, it depends upon your attitude.

HireEzy is committed to helping our clients turn the downturn in to a business opportunity.

Advertising – media type considerations

2
There is structural change going on in the world of advertising, in part it is being accelerated by the global downturn.

The structural changes relate to the decline of traditional advertising stalwarts, the yellow pages, print media and television advertising.

Firstly the Print Media

The print media has long been the main source of news, and hence advertising. However, good journalism, even bad comes at a price. The print media’s classified and advertising revenues have long funded their journalists and distribution costs. But that is no longer the case.

NEWSPAPER REVENUES FALL 29%

Internet news is cutting deep in to the traditional print media. Many companies have tried to build business models that are Internet friendly? Albeit that they are extensions of the old business models, such as subscription services. Such models have generally failed, for a variety of reasons, but one in particular dominates all. There is a perception amongst Internet users that information on the net is free or should be free. With so many other sources of information to choose from, browsers simply err away from subscription services to other free sources of information.

Journalists are having debates over the fact if you want good information you need to pay for it. That may be true, but at this stage of the Internets maturity, people appear to be less discerning in the quality of information they receive.

The Canadian Company Dialect has published a list of newspapers around the world that have been closed down,

Secondly Television Advertising

I read recently, unfortunately I can not remember the source, that over half the world’s television advertising spend is in the USA. Audience fragmentation is a main issue, people have choice now in their visual home entertainment, from free to air television, cable tv, Internet programs, even video games and dvd’s etc. This choice range acts to fragment the audience, and even the audience with in a household. Consider the old images from the 1950′s and 60′s probably even the 70′s of families all sitting around one TV watching the hit shows of the day. Now days, it is more likely that mom is watching on one TV, Dad on another, the kids in their rooms either on MSN messenger or playing video games.

Here are some statistics, in the UK there forecasts indicate that advertising revenue is expected to fall by nearly $0.7 Bn US in three years.  The USA television bureau is forecasting another 7% decline in advertising across the sector.

Finally Yellow Pages

Increasing research in the US and Australia has found that the use of the traditional yellow pages is declining.

People are increasingly turning to the Internet to find information, even local information. Some figures suggest that this the use of on-line search can be as high as 80% of all information searches.

Even Wall Street acknowledges that the days of printed directories like Yellow pages are numbered. The Wall Street Journal reported that advertising in US print directories is expected to fall 39% over the next four years.  In there words as people migrate en masse  to the web.

Dr Lynella Grant is the author of Yellow Page Smarts, she makes the point that relying on just yellow pages is now longer safe. She makes the points that over half of all customers now go to the internet first to find information even for local products.  This is not too say you should not have Yellow Pages advertising, rather you should not be singularly reliant on it.

As an example, speaking to one of our customers recently, he said.  When Dad run the business we use to spend up to $15-$20k a year on yellow pages advertising, we now spend $2k.  The reason is that our leads for our small print business are increasingly coming from both business and private customers finding us on the web – even the locals!

So what is going up

Well not surprising internet advertising is growing at around 10% per annum. Again this is not surprising either when you go back to fundamentals. The media companies whether TV or print provide information and entertainment. But so does the internet!

The yellow pages provided information that was traditional inaccessible – a list of all service providers in a category. But again so does the Internet, but it does so with the user being able to source information of their choice.

So what to do

Firstly, your advertising mix still needs to contain elements of each of the media services. Obviously depending on your target market and budget. Most companies are well versed and educated in advertising in these traditional forms, so there is not much point discussing them further.

Although it is worth mentioning that for small business it may be worth looking at TV advertising as the costs may be more palatable now, relative to the results.

What we would contend is that companies need to have a well considered marketing mix. The element needed though is to create a digital marketing foundation. An subject discussed in the next blog post.

Audio Visual Rental Hire – Marketing Options (updated)

2
The Audio Visual hire and rental industry appears to have weathered the recession.

The Audio Visual rental and hire industry had been experiencing solid rates of growth leading in to the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

According to various reports many had been planning to increase staff and inventory prior to the GFC .

However when the GFC hit, there was some discussion and predictions of doom and gloom.

But the suddenness of the crisis was thought to have left many exposed!

Firstly there was concern that the predicted collapse of the USA $175 Bn Corporate offsite meeting market would impact the AV rental and hire companies.   This figure includes all goods and services supplied to the market, of which AV rental is but one.

Discussions with our clients has indicated that whilst Corporate Off site meetings may have decreased.  Demand appeared to shift to providing AV equipment for on- client site meetings.

Cash flow Impacts

Whilst many indicated that there had been a fall in demand, the biggest issue was cash-flow.  In particular clients extending the payment term period.

Cash flow is the life blood for many AV hire and rental businesses given that many have large inventory debt costs to be serviced.

Many did not comment on the role of the banks in providing increased credit lines.  However based on evidence from other sectors it is likely that the banks were not that forth-coming.

A common theme amongst clients was the focus on cost management.  Those were able to identify, analyze and remove non value adding costs appeared to do well.

Cost management analysis must cover the entire natural business process from lead generation through bookings, service delivery, inventory to managing the accounts.  This total analysis ability is critical, as without it companies can cut costs in one area, only to find that costs rise in another.

This may sound trite, but in an industry that has grew rapidly through the boom years, cost management was not in many cases of core management focus.

Downturn Passing

Now that the downturn is passing and the green shoots of recovery are appearing, those AV companies who survived will be well placed.

Whilst it is expected the cash flow may remain an issue for the foreseeable future, revenue is expected to increase.

Positioning for Growth

The focus now moves to positioning for growth, picking up new markets and clients.

Given the lagging issue of cash flow, many may not have the marketing financial resources to take advantage of the emerging opportunities.

Look to Social Media Marketing

AV companies that find themselves in that position should seriously consider using Social Media Marketing.  Social Media marketing is growing rapidly, in particular by businesses of all sizes from Corporate to the Smallest.

Combining attraction tools like Twitter with content sources such as a blog can be incredibly effective.  Evidence from the USA shows that web site traffic can be increased as much as 55% using such tools.

Why Party Hire and Party Rental Companies should be Natural Social Media Marketers

At Evan's second birthday party (Gymboree)
Image via Wikipedia

We recently completed a two month market research project and found that the vast majority of Party Rental and Party Hire companies are not using Social Media.

This is really odd – given that Social Media is a Natural Fit for Party hire and Party Rental companies.

Social Media is how we now increasingly conceive and plan events and parties….

Well Social Media is how people connect with people socially in a digital world!

Its how they communicate and even plan get together’s, events, parties and even weddings!

AND its not just Gen Y, that use Social Media!

The fastest growing segments are primarily middle aged people and businesses.

Baby Boomers and Seniors are flocking to social media – Stats to Prove it

Primary Marketing Demographic of Party Rental and Party Hire companies is…

And who is the primary market demographic for Party hire and Party Rental companies – Middle Aged people (disposable income, children to be married off, home based entertainers etc) and Businesses (corporate events, client events etc)!  The very segment flocking to social media!

Hence why it is so strange!!!

Party and Event rental companies supply equipment and services to people holding events or parties.

As such they want and need to connect with people planning to hold such events or parties.

A primary segment that buys these services and hence they wish to connect to is the middle aged demographic.  Why because they are the a major purchasing of such services!

Missing A Golden Marketing Opportunity

Fundamentally Party hire and Party rental companies are missing a golden marketing opportunity.

To take the lead in connecting to these market segments.

So Why is it Not Used?

The research identified that the primary reasons for the failing to use Social Media was not understanding how to use it.

In the next article we explain how to use Social Media at each stage of the buying process of your customers.

McKinsey Global Economic Conditions Survey 2009

Hire and Rental companies considering their 2010 business plans or even next quarters activities will find the following article from McKinsey well worth reading.

A year after the global economic system nearly collapsed, many companies are finally finding ways to increase profits under the new economic conditions. But almost as many expect profits to continue falling, and executives also indicate that their broader economic hopes remain fragile. Many expect more government involvement in economies and industries over the long term.

Benefit from Economic Stimulus Packages

The impact of the Stimulus packages announced earlier this year should now begin to benefit the Hire and Rental industry.

stimulus package

Many projects announced in the Stimulus packages had lead times for tendering, design and planning stages, especially the larger projects.

The Hire and Rental industry is critical to the efficient delivery of these projects, as explained in previous post.

In essence the industry is critical because it can efficiently deliver equipment, resources and solutions to the companies delivering the projects with out the need for such delivery companies to use critical cash reserves to purchase equipment.

Stimulus Packages Size and Investment

During the earlier part of 2009, Governments in the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada  announced significant local stimulus packages.   A major portion of this investment has been directed towards Infra-Structure projects designed to kick start the construction sector.

The numbers are staggering!!!

stimulus table

Specific details on the USA package

Whilst some major projects in each country will have lag times as the tendering, design and planning stages are processed.   However many of the government initiatives have been directed towards accelerating numerous small projects.

These projects will be small, numerous and dispersed creating a demand on tools and equipment. Construction, Tool, Scaffolding and Temporary Fencing Rental and Hire companies may well be able to benefit from this demand. In order to meet the requirements of numerous competing projects, many construction companies may not be able to efficiently allocate and re-locate in-house tools and equipment.

Hence increasing demand for more construction hire equipment.

A second related issue is that in some countries, banks are forcing property developers to expedite projects or lose their line of credit.  This has had a flow on effect to Town Planning departments, where many are under heavy workloads to meet expedite approvals.

Small Projects Flow On

Some Western Governments have handed our tax incentives or cash hand outs to stimulate demand.  This could contribute to a growth in the home repair and maintenance market. Three factors may potentially contribute to the growth in this segment:

  1. Reduced equity in the home due to the fall in house prices will mitigate against many people borrowing against their house value to undertake major projects.
  2. Increased disposable cash from tax cuts and interest rate cuts may assist in home owners undertaking minor projects and repairs.
  3. The prospect of a greater focus on activities with friends and families, which includes home repair activities, again discussed in the previous post.

If you are considering improving your marketing to these segments Construction, Tool and Temporary Fencing then using HireEzy’s ( hire software, hire management software) inbuilt marketing tools will aid you substantially. For more information go to www.makinglifeezy.com.au

Party Hire and Rental Companies Downturn Opportunities

Small to Medium Party hire and rental businesses could be set to benefit from the downturn.  There is no denying that the world is heading in to uncharted economic waters.   The issue though for all small to medium party hire and rental businesses is survival and identifying opportunities.

Home Entertainment Market

One such opportunity is the apparent growth of the home entertainment market.  At first glance this may appear to be of little interest, but further investigation suggests it could be worth consideration.

Rising wealth over the last decade from both increasing property values and incomes led to an increase in away from home entertainment.  People went to clubs, venues and events to celebrate, relax and enjoy.   Not so anymore, people are staying home and inviting friends around.

This trend to home based entertainment has generated some interesting Corporate and Industry responses.  The USA spirits industry provides an example of how you too could consider accessing this market.

”The fact that people can transfer some of their entertaining to the home provides us with a certain amount of insulation from the economic downturn,” said David Ozgo, chief economist for the Distilled Spirits Council. “It’s not that our business declines, our rate of growth slows.”

To access this market change Spirits companies are chasing the home-entertaining consumer with a vigor, finding ways to aid their customers to re-produce their favorite cocktails they previously drank when they went out.

Accessing the home entertaining market means more than just creating awareness of your products.  It means painting a vision to your target market of what they could do!  Here are some examples:

“Bring Back the 70’s” – Invite your friends and family around for a Barbeque, dance to Juke Box in the backyard under the party lights. Let us help you bring back the fun – XYZ party-hire

“Entertaining at Home Theme Packs”  – Make your next home entertainment event the best night of your life with our “Entertaining at home theme packages”.  Themes for every occasion!

Marketing such packages could include a combination of letterbox drops, newspaper advertisements, television advertisements.  However by far the cheapest remains digital marketing such as on your website and emails to your customers.  Even consider using social media and other digital marketing ideas.  Articles below explain how to use Social Media and Digital marketing.

HireEzy, hire business management software, has the tools to enable you to do your own emails campaigns to your clients.  With the full web option, you can even update your own website yourself, saving time and money.  It also improves your web site ranking the more frequently you change your web site information.

Rental cars Competitiveness to Increase

This post discusses if there are opportunities for the smaller vehicle hire or smaller mixed hire and rental business, that has a small vehicle fleet?

Current Situation

One of the many flow on effects of the downturn is that major Rental Car companies are holding on to their vehicle stock longer. Car rental companies have previously relied on the credit provided by the Automotive Car giants. Such credit lines are no longer available or at least until such time as funds are provided from Government resources.

Compounding the problem is a decline in car rentals, particularly in the corporate and tourism markets.
Corporates are not only cutting back staff but also on travel. This cut back has flow on effects accross the hire and rental industry. As Corporates cut back – not only the Car rental, but also the taxi and limousine markets feel the effects. All three are related suppliers of transport services to the corporate sector. As the market shrinks, all three will begin to discount fares or hire charges to maintain cash flow.   Car rental companies with older stock may have greater room to move on discounting rental fees.  But such discounts may need to keep pace with the discount rates being given by the alternatives – taxi’s and limousines.  Limousines drivers are slashing their charges, in some cases being only marginally more than the cost of a taxi for the same trip.

The tourism sector is also declining. This will further reduce car rentals. Whilst domestic tourism may increase it is unlikely to provide a significant boost to the car rental market.

So where is the opportunity for the smaller vehicle rental operator and/or mixed rental hire business?

Those rental businesses with a good local clientele may be best positioned to survive the downturn. Whilst longer term rentals may decline, the demand for short term rentals of specialist vehicles (trucks, utilities etc) may increase. See post on growth in home repair market – Construction, Tool etc. Specialist vehicle rental companies such as wedding limousines etc may also suffer increased competition.

Pro-active marketing to your clientele with not only specials but examples of use would be effective.  For example – Time to clear up the garden? Then make it easier to take the waste to the disposal site with our weekend gardeners special – a 1 tonne truck or ute for $x per weekend.

With HireEzy creating marketing material such as this is easy.  And it is even easy to email it to your clients.  HireEzy has all your vehicle hire needs in one software package.  Go even further and use HireEzy to manage your on -line vehicle bookings all from the one package.

HireEzy is a product of Making Life Ezy, a company committed to positive ideas for our clients no matter what the economic conditions.
